Reliant Scimitar GTE SE5, first registered in 1969
This is a new project to us that has been under restoration for some years, the bulkhead had suffered damage from an engine bay fire and thus the front end has been replaced along with the bulkhead. Now we have to smooth out the damaged areas to the original lines.
This project is coming to an end now. The body is now straight again, but the bonnet has suffered from improper storage. The bonnet has been stored up against a wall, and thus the rear edges have warped out wards in such a way the when fitted to the car, the rear ends are curled upwards. To cure this I have had to cut off the affected areas and re make them to the correct profile.
It is worth noting at this point, that if you store fiberglass panels incorrectly, such as a bonnet against a wall, the heating and cooling affect of our climate will over a few years cause the panel to warp out of shape. If you are tackling a project that will take a few years to complete, make sure that you store your panels supported as if they were mounted on the car.
I am pleased to inform that the Scimitar is now ready for the spray shop. Since the last update, the whole car has been turned upside down, surface prepped and the chassis sprayed with etch primer and polyurethane paint. The chassis has had the suspension re installed as when the shell is painted, it will not be able to be lifted for a while as the paint will need time to harden. In a few weeks time we should be able to reveal the final finish.
